[EDIT] By the time I uploaded the images and created this post, the numbers had changed to 100+ cities and 25 countries.

It’s been less than a week since our new web site was opened to support our NeuroVault and NeuroKey applications.  In that time, we have recorded users in twenty countries.

.

Your response has been overwhelming – Thank You!

What an appropriate day to start my first ever blog!

I decided to create a blog because unlike static web pages, you can freely contribute your comments and ideas, which are very important to me.

While most posts will probably be related to our applications for the Emotiv Epoc headset, I won’t be able to resist having a say about cool gadgets and new technology.  Whatever the topic, I hope you will find something of interest.

It will take me a while to get the hang of organizing the blog content, so please bear with me and by all means, make suggestions.

If you see something of interest, please have a say and add your views or questions.  This is one blog where your opinions are wanted, even if they disagree with mine.

Did you know Neurovault automatically creates a ‘csv’ file with all the data from your recording session?

Yes, it does! If you have Excel or any other spreadsheet program (which supports CSV files), all you should need to do is double-click on the csv file in your NeuroVault data folder. Excel will correctly parse the data, loading it neatly into columns with a header.

You can then use the spreadsheet to analyse the data. You can also format the data any way you like and print detailed reports or define your own charts.

You will find an example of the csv file layout (with notes) here:

Due to an error, the version of NeuroKey on our web-site did not contain the automatic installer.

If you have had difficulties installing NeuroKey (because it didn’t install itself), please download the updated file.

We have posted a new version of NeuroVault on our main site.

Incorporates the following changes:

  • Added a ‘Seq’ field above the chart snapshot button. Chart snapshots are now saved with a five digit suffix appended onto the file name. This allows you to take multiple snapshot views of the chart data, during a recording or playback session, at different zoom levels etc. You can pre-set the counter value (0 to 99999).
  • Eliminated chart export button.
  • Added a new auto export feature. Whenever recording finishes, a comprehensive CSV file is created. This is a fully compliant CSV file thus it can be loaded into Excel (or similar) by double-clicking on it. Excel will automatically parse it, eliminating the need to use the Excel data import function.
  • Minor internal changes relating to the way files are created and saved.

From time to time, you will need to maintain the contacts to keep them operating like new. You will need the following items from your local pharmacy or drug store:

  • Quantity of 0.4% to 0.9% saline.
  • Small quantity (50 mil) pure isopropyl alcohol.
  • Six good quality cotton (ear) buds.

Following the instructions provided by Emotiv systems, remove all of the contacts from the headset arms (or fingers). Remove the felt pads and soak them in a flat dish with about 2 mm of saline on the bottom. While the felt pads are soaking, wet a cotton bud with the alcohol and rub the gold contact in the felt pad holder. If there is a buildup of salts, let it soak a while and try again later.  If necessary, flush out any debris from the salts using either alcohol or saline. IMPORTANT: Never use any type of sharp item to scrape the salts off. Even the smallest scratch will damage the contact and the underlying metal will be destroyed in time by the electrolysys process. Once all the gold contacts have been cleaned, you should now revive the felt pads. I have noticed (in the dry Australian summer) that the salts build up within the internal felt structure as vertical columns.  You can often detect this by squeezing the pad sideways and then comparing that to squeezing it vertically.  If it appears brittle or is noticeably stiffer when you compress it vertically, this is a good indication there is a columnar buildup. If needed, fully saturate the pad in saline for ten minutes then carefully squeeze it vertically to half its height then reshape it round again.  If you flatten it too much, the pad may break apart. Repeat this a few times for each pad. You should notice a significant increase in comfort when you next use the headset. One at a time, shake off the excess saline from the pad and re-insert it into it’s holder. Screw the holder and pad assembly into the socket on the headset arm. At all times, you should avoid letting any liquid get into the electronics. Connect everything up again and test the headset with the Emotiv Control Panel. DISCLAIMER: While the above process has worked very well for me, it is your responsibility to enure it is suitable for your needs.

Having problems getting started with NeuroKey?

…please try the following:

If you are using the version that shipped on the Emotiv Systems installation DVD, its possible that it is not installed correctly.  Unfortunately, time did not permit us to include a setup program with that distribution.

NeuroKey Step By Step

Please download the latest version from our web site:

http://www.AffordableTechnology.com.au/Neuro/NeuroKey.htm

Run the file you just downloaded.  It contains a SetupAssist feature which will locate and validate the various Emotive libraries that it requires and install itself.

It’s important the you follow each step below:

  • Quit all running applications (except this screen).
  • Plug-in the headest USB dongle and switch the headset on.
  • Run NeuroKey by clicking on the desktop icon or by clicking ‘Start’ then ‘All Programs’ and then ‘NeuroKey’.
  • Click the ‘More Options’ button.
  • Change the ‘Headset Mode’ to ‘All Detections’ (even if that is already selected).
  • Wait for the ‘Headset Activity’ LED to turn green and stop flashing. This should not take more than ten seconnds.

Several Emotiv programs will now load and you will be prompted (by the Emotiv Control Panel) to select the correct user profile. Select your profile and press ‘Ok’.

  • Make sure you have green indicatior for all contacts on the Control Panel screen.
  • Minimize the Control Panel program.
  • Select the following detection options in NeuroKey:
Scan Left = Gyroscope Left
Scan Right = Gyroscope Right
Row Up = Gyroscope Up
Row Down = Gyroscope Down
Keypress = Brow Up

Move your head about, using brisk movements, while watching the large green arrows on the NeuroKey screen.

You should notice the green up-arrow flashes when you flick your chin downwards, and the scam row should now be one lower. Brisk left or right movements should change the scan direction and an upward movement should select the scan row above.

When the letter you want is highlighted, raise your eyebrow fully and listen for the confirmation beep.

You have now verified the program is setup and connected to the headset. Practice a bit the try the different detection methods such as using eye movement or thoughts etc.

The Main Cause of Problems

So far, almost every problem that we have resolved has related to one of the above steps being skipped. It is critical that no Emotive applications (EmoComposer or Control Panel) are running before you start NeuroKey.

NOTE: You must let NeuroKey start the programs it needs, and it will also terminate them itself when you quit NeuroKey.

Testing NeuroKey

You can test NeuroKey by repeating the steps above, but set the Headset Mode to “EmoComposer Test Mode” this time.  This will cause EmoComposer to load (as well as the other Emotiv programs).  You can now manually test each of the detections by changing the appropriate value in EmoComposer.

Still Having  a Problem?

If you have followed each of the above setps but still have problems. please contact us via the priority support email address you received when you registered NeuroKey.  If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so now by going to the download page, or you can use the web feedback form:

Register now:  http://affordabletechnology.com.au/product_download.htm

Feedback Form: http://affordabletechnology.com.au/feedback_submission.htm

Please provide as much detail as possible.  The quality of our reply is determined by the information you provide.  Problems like “It don’t work” are very hard to diagnose.

Note:  A snapshot of the screen can often lead us straight to the problem and a quick resolution for you. To take a full screen snap-shot just press the CTRL key then tap the ‘PRN-SCRN’ or ‘PRINT SCREEN’ key.  This will place a picture of you screen into the clipboard, consult your email program documentation for details on how to email the image.  Send the picture and details to the support address you received when you registered your copy of NeuroKey.

Please ensure you use the CTRL key and not the ALT key.
